'S no Problem

Two new Tennesseans, fresh from the tropics, experienced their first really cold spell. We went for 7 days straight below freezing. Today got up to 37 degrees and it almost felt balmy! Here are a few pictures of our deep freeze. The truck is our new (to us) 1991 GMC Sierra 1500 4x4. It has 137,000 miles and we are the second owner. We love it!!
After selling our solar-powered off-grid home in north Florida and living in a sailboat for almost 2 years, in October of 2009 we bought a homestead in the western highland rim of central Tennessee. We had just begun to renovate a 100-year old church on the property, when a 500-year flood on May 2, 2010 destroyed it, our car and most of our belongings. We are now building a new house on higher ground and starting to create a forest garden.

My Other Half
I met Randy Cullom in December of 1990 on a hike with the Florida Trail Association. He was an avid black bear tracker and agreed to take me and another friend to look for bears in the Ocala National Forest. We did see a small bear to our delight! After a few camping trips, we started dating, and eventually married on Sept. 24, 1994. He is a real sport and goes along with most of my crazy schemes (and has a few of his own). He has been a builder, a sailor, and now is looking forward to being a farmer . . . and he loves cats.
The Florida Solar Cracker House
We spent roughly a decade designing and building a solar-powered home in north Florida. From cutting our own wood with a bandsaw sawmill to hand building an energy-efficient timber-framed house, we did almost all of the work ourselves with the help of our friend, Rob Brinkman. The sailing years
After selling our solar-powered house in Florida and me retiring from the University of Florida in 2006, we bought a 36' sailboat and moved aboard. We sailed to the Bahamas two winters, usually not far from our sailing buddy Jock Ames in his Cape Dory "Home At Last".
In summers, we sailed up the east coast to North Carolina, and south to the Florida Keys before hauling out in St. Petersburg, Florida in summer 2008. At that point, we decided to look for a new homestead, and eventually landed in central Tennessee. This blog will follow our adventures in Tennessee.
